“For two years, he seemed disingenuous and defensive, pushed into roles that his predecessors had scripted, alternately playing savior then monster. But no more. We can finally see who he is, we can finally understand the reality: In 2011, it is possible to be a levelheaded, warmhearted, cold-blooded killer who can crack a joke and write a book for his daughters. It is possible to be many things at once. And even more miraculous, it is possible for that man to be the president of the United States. Barack Obama is developing into what Hegel called a “world-historical soul,” an embodiment of the spirit of the times. He is what we hope we can be. We love Obama — even those who claim to despise him — because deep in our hearts and all over our lives, we’re the same way — both inside and outside our jobs, our races, our cities, our countries, ourselves. With great artists, often the most irritating feature of their work is the source of their talent. Obama’s gift is the same as his curse: He’s somehow managed to be like the rest of us, only infinitely more so.”
“How Can We Not Love Obama?” - Stephen Marche (Esquire)

“Across the globe cataclysmic weather events are occurring with such regularity that it’s being called a ‘New Normal’ — but there’s nothing normal about it.”

Some 2011 goals/resolutions

1) Travel more. Specifically, to Southeast Asia — Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma. Also, China — I want to walk the Great Wall and see the terracotta soldiers (and survive on soup dumplings alone).

2) Eat healthy, natural food — of course, there’s still room for an occasional splurge ;)

3) Optimism — You know, “glass half full” and all that jazz. Message to New York: You’ve really gotta lighten up, man.

4) Move — Speaking of New York…I’mma let you finish, but after more than 6 years it’s time for something different.

5) Work/Life balance — No more of this ultra-American metropolitan “live to work” crap. From now on, it’s “work to live,” Italian style. Why, yes! I will take an espresso break!

6) Make friends a priority — Stay in touch and keep promises.

7) Get a tan — Holy shit…I’ve never been so white in my life.

8) Make things — It’s time to feed my creative spirit again, whether through writing, art, cooking, or crafts. I’m not down for this wake, work, sleep, repeat routine.

9) Take more naps — Nothing wrong with an afternoon snooze on a Sunday afternoon.

10) Follow through — Make goals and keep them. Stay motivated, do more, and enjoy life.

Dear Paycheck

Take Note: “…In fact, blondes make on average 7 percent more than non-blondes, about equal to the income boost attained by an extra year of education. And blondes marry people who make approximately 6 percent more than the spouses of women with other hair colors.” - Do Blondes Have More Funds?
